Q1. What are fanchants?

A: Fanchants are synchronized shouting of words, either by repetition of the line’s last word/ syllable, or shouting out the members' names.

Q2. Is it really necessary to learn fanchants? In my country, we just sing all the lyrics.

A: Singing is a great way to assure the artists that the people attending their concerts have indeed listened to their music.

Fanchanting is prevalent mainly in songs of KOREAN idol groups, and it's a different kind of special because fanchants highlight certain lyrics and/ or deliver hidden messages that only the artist and the fans understand.

Think of fanchanting as if you are a member of a choir wherein you're NOT the star of the song because you're only supposed to enter at certain parts. The real star of the song are the artists themselves, and by fanchanting, the synchronized cheering, we would hear more of the artist's vocals instead of our own (or our seatmates’) singing voice.

Q3. Does this mean that fanchants are NOT only about shouting the artists names? There are more words involved in fanchants?!!

A: That's right. Fanchants are NOT limited to shouting only the group members' names. As mentioned in Q1 & Q2, sometimes the last syllable or word will be repeated, or we’ll need to shout other words to deliver a hidden message (like in PTD) β€” and those extra words will make up the fanchant.

That said, incoherent screaming are NOT considered fanchants. And singing along are simply singing along, so don't call that fanchanting, too.

Q4. Who made these fanchant guides and what makes them "official" ?

A: BTS' Fanchants that are listed in the directory are created by a Big Hit staff, whom has referred to themselves as "Big Hit Fanclub Manager". They have referred to themselves as such ever since BTS' first song with Official Fanchant β€” β€˜No More Dream’.

These Official Fanchant Guides are posted on both BTS' official fancafe (2013β€” V-For Us), and on Weverse (for songs from 2020-present).

Q5. Are you a Big Hit staff and that's why you're doing these videos?

A: No, I am not a Big Hit staff, nor am I related to Big Hit. I am also merely a fan, an ARMY who wants to help other ARMYs learn the fanchants in an auditory way.
